NNSS ABEOKUTA

Name and Type of School: The official name of the school is Nigerian Navy Secondary School Ibara Abeokuta (NNSS Abeokuta). The school is for boys only and is full boarding. Students of NNSS Abeokuta are fondly called Navy Boys.

 

Date of Establishment:    NNSS Abeokuta was established on Saturday 2 February 1991 as the second Nigerian Navy Secondary School.

 

Location: NNSS Abeokuta is located at Adigbe; about a kilometre from Ibara Post Office in Abeokuta the Ogun State capital. It is about 78 km from Ibadan, 56 km from Shagamu and 77.66 km from Lagos.

 

Purpose of Establishment.      Owing to the success of the NNSS Ojo project, the demand for secondary school education for service children increased geometrically. Consequently, NNSS Abeokuta was established to ease the pressure on Ojo and provide an alternative choice of school. Like NNSS Ojo, its primary role is to provide qualitative education for secondary school aged children of serving and retired NN personnel, other services and civilians.

 

Leadership and Management: The school is managed by the School Management Committee headed by the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral IE Ibas. Its pioneer Commandant was Lieutenant Commander SEA Olamilokun who retired as a Commodore. The current management team of the school comprises the Commandant, Commander MA Adetunji and the Deputy Commandant, Lieutenant Commander CO Dick-Ubi. Other members of the school management are as follows:

Organisation: NNSS Abeokuta has a students’ population of 1122 Navy Boys from JSS 1 to SSS 3. These classes are organised into 6/7 arms. The arms are named after Nigerian Navy Ships (NNS). These are Agu, Ayam, Barama, Damisa, Ekpe, Ekun and Ohue. The students are also administered in 4 houses named after past Chiefs of the Naval Staff. These are Admirals AA Aikhomu, PS Koshoni, MAH Nyako and DPE Omatsola.

 

School Activities:    NNSS Abeokuta has a strong academic tradition and is both an active participant and a foremost performer in co-curricular and extra curricular activities. In terms of academics, it runs the National Basic Education curriculum which covers the 3 domains of learning namely: cognitive, affective and psychomotor development. Additionally, NNSS Abeokuta actively engages in sports, debates, quizzes, cultural, vocational, talent hunt and other entrepreneurship development activities to broaden and enrich the learning experiences of students.

 

Activities: Some of the recent achievements of NNSS Abekuta are as follows:

 

a.     NNSS Abeokuta recorded 75% of credits in 5 subjects including English Language and Mathematics in the May/June 2012 WASCE.

b.     Chemistry Department of NNSS Abeokuta recently produced some chemical products like Emulsion Paints, Perfumes, Disinfectants, White Board Renovators and Air Fresheners. These products called NABOL products are used in the school and are ready for marketing to the public.

c.      National Informatics Olympiad Competition, organised by the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, student Oribamishe Ayomide of SSS 1 Ayam came 2nd Nationwide. He is scheduled to represent Nigeria in Australia for International Competition in July 2013.

d.     Navy Boy Hamzat Farouk of JSS 2 Damisa came 1st overall in Nigeria, in 2013 American Mathematics Competition, Junior category.
